The Bull
The Grade 2-listed 16th-century Bull Inn, located prominently in the High Street, is the only surviving pub in Much Hadham, a village of over 2,000 inhabitants. There were once twelve pubs in the village and in recent years both the Jolly Wagonners and The Crown have shut.
An interesting bit of 'history' lies in the story that an elephant was buried somewhere in the grounds after dying during an overnight stay with a circus troupe.
The Bull is a vital community hub for people living in the village as well as being used extensively by others living in the surrounding area and by visitors. It provides a welcoming, family-friendly venue where local people can meet, socialise, drink and eat in a convivial setting, including in an attractive garden, with a lovely aspect to enjoy, especially in the summer months. As such, the pub contributes crucially to social cohesion and a sense of community.
It is used extensively by local groups, who either meet in the pub or who gather there after holding meetings elsewhere, often in the Village Hall, which is just across the road from The Bull. Among the local groups who regularly use the pub are the WI (who have a monthly lunch), a Ladies’ group, who meet there weekly, a book club, who also meet there weekly, the Drama Group, the Pantomime Group, the Horticultural Society, the Tennis Club, and a Veterans’ group, who hold a fortnightly lunch there. Others who gather there from time to time include the church bell ringers. Since the pub re-opened following the easing of Covid restrictions, it has organised an increasing number of events which contribute to the wellbeing and social life of the local community, including monthly quiz nights, bingo nights, live music events and seasonal or celebratory events such as for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
The pub is also a local hub, helping newcomers to the village to meet their fellow residents and to make connections and integrate into the life of Much Hadham.
The Bull has been listed as an Asset of Community Value (ACV): see separate page.
The Group is keen to support the pub and to encourage local residents and others to use it in order to help ensure its continued existence.
